5 Tasks Every UK Limited Company Should Complete Before Christmas
The run-up to Christmas is busy enough without worrying about unfinished admin or January deadlines. A little preparation now can save you stress, cash-flow issues and awkward conversations in the New Year.
Here are five key tasks every UK limited company should complete before switching on the out-of-office.
1. Check Your Bookkeeping Is Up to Date

Before the year winds down, make sure your books are in good shape.
✔️ All sales invoices raised and recorded
✔️ All expenses uploaded (especially those festive ones)
✔️ Bank feeds reconciled and balances checked
Starting January with messy bookkeeping often leads to rushed decisions, missed claims and unnecessary pressure. A tidy set of books gives you clarity and control going into the new year.

2. Review Your Cash Flow
Cash flow doesn’t take a Christmas break – even if your business does.
✔️ Review what money is due in and what needs to go out over the festive period
✔️Factor in quieter trading days or delayed customer payments
✔️ Check you have enough cash to cover wages, VAT and suppliers
If cash flow looks tight, it’s far better to know now than discover it halfway through January.
3. Chase Outstanding Invoices

This is one many business owners put off – but it makes a big difference.
✔️Send polite payment reminders before businesses close
✔️Follow up where necessary
Once companies shut down for Christmas, unpaid invoices often don’t get looked at until mid-January. Getting paid before Christmas can significantly improve your cash position and reduce stress.

4. Make Sure Payroll Is Sorted
Payroll issues just before Christmas are the last thing anyone wants.
✔️Confirm payroll dates over the festive period
✔️Factor in bank holidays and staff annual leave
✔️ Make sure submissions and payments are scheduled correctly
Taking a few minutes to double-check payroll now avoids unhappy staff and last-minute scrambles later.
5. Think Ahead to January

Strong businesses don’t just switch off – they plan ahead.
✔️Confirm upcoming deadlines (VAT returns, PAYE, accounts)
✔️Set 1–3 clear business goals for Q1
✔️ Review what worked well this year and what didn’t
January feels much more manageable when you already know what’s coming.
